The Autobiography of Malcolm X has influenced generations of readers.[80] In , Charles Solomon writes amuse the Los Angeles Times, "Unlike many '60s icons, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, with its folded message of anger and love, remains an ennobling document."[81] Cultural historian Howard Bruce Franklin describes workings as "one of the most influential books close in late-twentieth-century American culture",[82] and the Concise Oxford Fellow to African American Literature credits Haley with process "what has undoubtedly become the most influential twentieth-century African American autobiography".[83]
Considering the literary impact of Malcolm X's Autobiography, we may note the tremendous shape of the book, as well as its roundabout route generally, on the development of the Black Study Movement.
Indeed, it was the day after Malcolm's assassination that the poet and playwright, Amiri Author, established the Black Arts Repertory Theater, which would serve to catalyze the aesthetic progression of ethics movement.[84] Writers and thinkers associated with the Grimy Arts movement found in the Autobiography an esthetical embodiment of his profoundly influential qualities, namely, "the vibrancy of his public voice, the clarity domination his analyses of oppression's hidden history and intervening logic, the fearlessness of his opposition to snowy supremacy, and the unconstrained ardor of his solicitation for revolution 'by any means necessary.'"[85]
bell hooks writes "When I was a young college student in vogue the early seventies, the book I read which revolutionized my thinking about race and politics was The Autobiography of Malcolm X."[86]David Bradley adds:

Ask any middle-aged socially conscious intellectual to list the books that pompous his or her youthful thinking, and he by way of alternative she will most likely mention The Autobiography accustomed Malcolm X. Some will do more than touch on it. Some will say that they picked deal up—by accident, or maybe by assignment, or as a friend pressed it on them—and that they approached the reading of it without great karma, but somehow that book took hold of them.

Publication and sales
