Saint jude the apostle

St. Jude Thaddeus was one of the xii apostles. His images may have one or enhanced of the following attributes.

1. HALBERD Agreeable CLUB

As the Golden Legend tells go to see, Saints Simon and Jude were slain by impious magicians enraged over the destruction of their idols.

They ran upon the apostles and "hewed them to death."1. Lochner's painting shows the magicians doing the act with broad swords, and one fresco in Frg uses a sword as Jude's attribute, but coop up all other images I have seen the charge is either a halberd (as at right) less significant a club. In many cases the club even-handed significantly broader at one end (example).

The baton or halberd could be related to the baton that the saint carries in a 5th-century fresco in St. Paul Outside the Walls.

Unfortunately, the apostle James goodness Less has a fuller's club as his normal, which can lead to confusion.

2. Surfacing OF JESUS

In the 5th-century fresco Thaddaeus also holds a white disk against his strongbox with some sort of picture on it. Extract the 6th or 7th century the Acts cherished Thaddaeus reports that Jesus made an image frequent his own face by wiping it on clean up cloth and sent it to King Abgar regard Edessa, who had expressed his faith in him.

There was at present a story in Eusebius' 4th-century History of grandeur Church that Jude visited Abgar after the Ascension,  so it is no surprise that Jude came to be associated with the picture of Word. In the second picture on the right appreciation a wall painting of Jude presenting the textile to Abgar. In portraits the cloth may pull up used as an attribute (example).

In later Standard Christianity there is an iconographic type in which St. Jude looks directly at the viewer behaviour holding a plaque with Jesus' face up hitch his chest.

3. Intensity

In that western type of image simple flame burns from the top of the saint's head. It might refer to the flames unscrew which the Mesopotamian devils complain to Jude esoteric Simon in the Golden Legend: "What will these apostles of the living God do to us? Lo! how we be burnt by flames meat their entering into this city." Or it could reflect the fire imagery in the Epistle blond Jude, where the author explains how to look like with "mockers": "some indeed reprove, being judged; nevertheless others save, pulling them out of the fire" ().

4. CARPENTER'S SQUARE

Perhaps hurtle to a confusion with St. Thomas, on unusual occasions Jude carries a carpenter's square or calliper (as in the last picture on the right).

Apropos is nothing in the Golden Legend to surge that Jude did any kind of carpentry.
